June 18, 2009: Team BPSOS not only smashed their $3,000 fundraising goal for the American Liver Foundation’s 2009 5K Virginia Liver Life Walk on May 30 – they had fun in the process and even persuaded their reluctant team mascot to go the distance!

Under the leadership of team captain Alexia Kim-Phuong Christie, the 31-strong team tramped out the 5K course to glory, raising a total of $3,865 to fight diseases of the liver.

Why was Team BPSOS’ participation so important? The fast facts: Hepatitis B and C viruses are both known as “silent killers” that afflict the liver, and a person may be infected – and infectious – for many years without significant symptoms or knowing they are infected. If left untreated, both viruses can lead to liver scarring (cirrhosis), and potentially to liver cancer, liver failure, and death. Worse, the hepatitis B virus is highly infectious – about 50-100 times more than HIV. This means life or death for many Vietnamese, who have the highest incidence of liver cancer among all Asian subgroups. In fact, Vietnamese-American men are over 10 times more likely to be diagnosed with liver cancer than their white counterparts!

That’s a lot of statistics. But for members of Team BPSOS, all of these hard, cold facts have a human face.

“I participated in the Liver Life Walk event and walked an two extra miles for three reasons,” said Trang Khanh Tran, director of BPSOS’ Community Development Department. “First, to remember my brother-in-law, who passed away because of liver cancer; second, to honor all of my donors, who generously contributed for the good cause; and third, to get an opportunity to exercise myself!”

The $3,865 total netted Kim-Phuong the honor of “Top Fundraising Team Captain.” Also bagged was the “Best Recruiting Team Captain” award (left). Tran, walking in memory of her brother-in-law, took the second-place award for “Top Individual Fundraiser,” followed by Kim-Phuong in third.

Getting in Step

All of this recognition and success came about through a lot of hard work.

“When I was approached by Jodie Campbell-Jacobs of the American Liver Foundation to create a team to fundraise for the 2009 Virginia Liver Life Walk, I was a little hesitant but also excited by the opportunity,” said Kim-Phuong. “After consulting with a few co-workers and confirming that they were on board for the walk, I went for it and created a team.”

Fortunately, on the day of the walk the weather was absolutely gorgeous. It had rained the day before, so the walk trail was lush and green. The sky was clear and blue, and there was a nice gentle breeze that just made the walk an even better experience. It wasn’t laborious; rather, it was effortless and more like a stroll with good friends in company.

Even with the good weather, the team mascot, beloved canine MacDuff, took some convincing. At the midway point, he retreated to a strategic position and held out for a nap. The team, while charmed by his furry good looks, refused to turn the event into a “Nap for Life,” and in the end “His Majesty” deigned to finish the course.

“It was a great day!” conceded MacDuff at the end of the walk. “It was wonderful to spend time with good friends and raise money for a great cause!”

“I am always happy to share my cuteness for a good cause!” added the team mascot. “However, two laps was asking a lot …”

Community Supports Remarkable Feet

All of this took place with generous support from the community, who opened their hearts and pockets in recognition of the importance of stopping liver disease, the “silent killer” of Vietnamese Americans.

For those who wish to show a little love to the sponsors of this important community event, the word is that the Present Restaurant was the biggest Team BPSOS backer – and that happened despite the fact that their establishment is known to be hit with sponsorship requests all the time! Lovers of fine cuisine can find Present Restaurant at 6678 Arlington Blvd. in Falls Church, VA, and reach them at 703.531.1881 or click here for more information.

Team BPSOS is also grateful to Alan Frank, the second-highest sponsor. He is the general counsel and senior vice president of the Eden Center, which is well-known as the shopping mecca of the East Coast Asian community. To learn more about Eden Center, click here. Team BPSOS especially appreciated the fact that, above and beyond the sponsorship, he posted flyers about the walk on the highly visible Eden Center bulletin board!

A team can’t get by without colorful t-shirts, and that’s where Cho Saigon came in. The entire team appreciated Cho Saigon’s sponsorship of the Team BPSOS t-shirts. For a fine array of products from Vietnam and Southeast Asia, please make a point of visiting Cho Saigon at 6763 Wilson Blvd. in Falls Church, VA, or calling 703.533.0863 for more details.

Lastly, the team also got a boost from Anh Oi, creators of T-shirts encapsulating the Vietnamese spirit. Anh Oi got behind both the t-shirt sponsorship and their printing. To add some hot Vietnamese summer style to your wardrobe, click here.

“Both Cho Saigon and Anh Oi can be proud of the fact that we were the only team out of a total of 17 that had team t-shirts!” said Kim-Phuong.

Liver Life Walk Achievements

Of course, Team BPSOS was one of many doing their part to stop liver disease. The overall achievements of the American Liver Foundation’s 2009 5K Virginia Liver Life Walk included an impressive 159 walkers and fundraisers, a grand total of 17 teams, 14 volunteers, and an incredible $20,966 raised!

Reflecting on the big event and the hours of work that went into making it a reality, team captain Kim-Phuong had this to say:

“I’m so proud of my team members. I just want to say ‘thank you’ to each and every one of you for participating in the Liver Life Walk. Your participation meant a lot to me, the American Liver Foundation and communities across the United States. You all should be very proud of yourselves.”
