Wrapping up five months of short-term disaster recovery work, the Ike team paid a final visit to the Cambodian-American community in Rosharon, an unincorporated area in Brazoria County, on May 4. The team spent the day distributing gifts such as clothes and toys while assisting a total of 35 families.

“Most of the problems we’ve seen in Rosharon have been minimal compared to those of other places we’ve been to,” Nancy Le, Ike Team case manager, said afterwards. “Challenges facing this community include roof problems, power outages, and slight flooding.”

“Since I started working I’ve done a few intakes for clients in Rosharon who’ve been affected by Hurricane Ike,” said case manager Tue Dinh. “Many people are living in unfinished homes where the roof stills leaks.”

In unincorporated areas of Texas like Rosharon, farming is the main source of revenue, and one that is heavily affected by natural disasters. This vulnerability has pummeled residents’ livelihoods in the past.

“Now that we have moved on to long-term recovery, we’re envisioning programs to help these communities gain more steady sources of income,” said Cassady Le, IDRP outreach coordinator for the relief effort.
