May 27, 2009: Thirty-one teams of hard-charging paddlers, among them BPSOS-Charlotte branch manager Linh Quach, competed in the 2009 Charlotte Dragon Boat Race on May 16.
“We won first place in our division,” said Quach, who described the race experience as achy, but good. “We got one honor medal and another first place medal!”
This, the fourth annual competition of its type, was held in conjunction with the 10th Annual Asian Festival. The race featured some dramatic weather (meaning cloudbursts) as well as exciting, competitive races.
In the end, teams comprised of members of the Charlotte Dragon Boat Association took the first two spots. But the real victors were everyone who participated and watched this ancient sporting event, so much a part of Southeast Asian heritage, come to life.
