Tin Tức – News: The Family of a Vietnamese-American Hero Needs Your Help

potomac1May 7, 2009: Today, you have the opportunity to give urgently needed support to the family of a Vietnamese-American hero who sacrificed his life trying to save a drowning boy.

Hau T. Nguyen, 37, is believed to have jumped into the Potomac River on Sunday, April 26 in an effort to save the life of 11-year-old Jorge Castro, who had fallen into the water nearby. His body was recovered on Saturday, May 2.

Nguyen, who worked as an auto mechanic in Virginia, is survived by his wife, Hong Thuthi Vo, and their son, Henry, who will turn 2 on Father’s Day. His daughter Susan is 9.

Nguyen’s wife and Thanh Vo, her brother, told The Washington Post that Nguyen was a strong swimmer who had grown up along a river in Vietnam and had jumped into the Chesapeake Bay to rescue a friend a few years ago. “If he saw someone needing help like that, he’d just jump in,” Thanh Vo said.

Nguyen’s widow called her husband a “good man, a sweet man,” who “you loved the first time you talked to him.”

“When my son grows up, I want him to be like his dad,” she added.

Readers who wish to make a donation to this hero’s family can do so by making out a check to Mrs. Vo Thi Thu Hong, and sending it to 6706 Poplar St., Falls Church, VA, 22042.
