BPSOS staff members deal with the intake process for one of the Bridge City area’s Vietnamese-American residents.
March 3, 2009: Ike team members staff attorney Robert Pham, case managers Jannette Diep, Annie Trinh, and Nancy Le returned to Bridge City on Thursday 26, where their committee in charge of dealing with unmet needs approved a total of $17,241.76 in vouchers.
“We also distributed an additional $1,300 in gift cards for the families of Bridge City,” said Diep. “The money will be used for bills, groceries, basic necessities, appliances, and furniture to replace what was damaged in the storm.”
Tri Nguyen was gracious enough to allow the team to use his home as a base from which to assess the needs of the area’s hurricane survivors.
“We’re very grateful to Mr. Nguyen for allowing us to use his home for these efforts,” said Diep. “Having that place to work from makes a world of difference.”
“I am so grateful for BPSOS’ help,” said Bridge City resident Coi Nguyen (right), one of the beneficiaries of BPSOS’ efforts. “The Ike team really lifted my spirits when I saw that check.”
“Now, my account won’t go into delinquent status and I’ll be able to catch up with my payments going forward, added Nguyen. “Thank you!”
During a similar visit recently, BPSOS-Houston’s Emergency Response and Recovery Program met with over 40 people from the Bridge City area, including many Vietnamese immigrants. The most recent return visit was due to the overwhelming response to the first BPSOS outreach, and showed the extent and lasting effects of Hurricane Ike. When Ike slammed into Bridge City after making landfall on September 13, 2008, it was the third-most destructive storm ever to hit the United States.
With the backing of the Gulf Coast Ike Relief Fund of the Greater Houston Community Foundation, the BPSOS-Houston office will be meeting the needs of even more hurricane survivors. For information about how to volunteer your skills or call attention to particular needs within the Vietnamese-American community after Ike, please call branch manager Trish Nguyen at 281.550.6888.
