Boat People SOS, Inc. (BPSOS), a national Vietnamese-American community-based organization with 14 branch offices nationwide, is looking for a Volunteer Program Coordinator who will perform the vital role of recruiting, managing, and training a pool of volunteer leaders to boost our service and advocacy efforts. The right candidate will be instrumental in providing proactive, long-range strategies that will strengthen the organization’s human resources.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and conduct volunteer outreach campaign and recruitment activities, both in person and through web, print, and other communication avenues. Weekend and evening hours for recruitment, training and retention are required;
  • Create and carry out a plan for training staff at BPSOS branches across the country in how to recruit and coordinate their own volunteers, including production of standardized training manuals and modules;
  • Work one-on-one with all part-time and full-time volunteers, including AmeriCorps members, to provide support and administrative oversight, while also identifying volunteer’s skills, aspirations, and training needs;
  • Work with management staff members to develop a deep understanding of the volunteer needs of each program, and become skilled at connecting the right volunteer with the right roles;
  • Develop a long-term strategy to ensure the stability and sustainability of the BPSOS volunteer base by identifying funders and completing funding proposals for new projects, as well as project renewal applications on the national and state levels;

  • Maintain accurate records of volunteer involvement by becoming familiar with both the content and technical aspects of BPSOS’ database and maintaining it at a high level of accuracy; and
  • Perform other duties as required to fulfill the mission of the organization.

Qualifications

  • College degree (or equivalent experience) plus one year in community or social services;
  • Outstanding “people” skills, as well as excellent written and verbal communications skills;
  • Superb self-organization and self-discipline;
  • Outstanding ability to take initiative and work under pressure with limited supervision;
  • Demonstrated ability to interact professionally with staff, clients, fund and service providers and work productively in diverse team settings;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite: Excel, Word, Access and Outlook;
  • Deep commitment to justice and dignity for immigrants and their families; and
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends when required.

Additional qualifications

  • Vietnamese language skills (preferred, but not required);
  • Background in organizing or volunteer program management (preferred, but not required); and
  • Familiarity with immigrant, refugee, youth or senior issues (preferred, but not required).

The position may involve some travel to other BPSOS branches across the country to train staff and volunteers.

Salary

Dependent on qualifications, years of experience, and past achievements. Includes generous benefits package.
