BPSOS Ike teamBPSOS’ Hurricane Ike Disaster Recovery Program (DCMP) team brings to bear a vast array of talents and skills to meet the needs of Hurricane Ike survivors.

July 2, 2009: After nine months of hard work responding to the community’s unmet needs following Hurricane Ike, the short-term disaster recovery team at BPSOS-Houston is winding down its operations.

“We helped a total of 1,047 clients in five counties,” said case manager Jannette Diep.

But Diep’s case files, like those of her colleagues, are not going to be closed just yet. Indeed, the work of BPSOS has only started.

“We knew that with the short-term disaster recovery program, we weren’t able to provide adequate assistance to all the families,” said Annie Trinh, case manager supervisor. “Some of the families still need help, and that’s why there’s a need for the long-term disaster case management program.” Read More…

Liver Walk MacDuff 1 Vietnam Vietnamese BPSOS Boat People SOS families health mental health Ủy Ban Cứu Người Vượt Biển gia đình sức khỏeTeam mascot MacDuff, despite having two extra feet, had to be coaxed into finishing the full 5K – but redeemed himself through perky cuteness.

June 18, 2009: Team BPSOS not only smashed their $3,000 fundraising goal for the American Liver Foundation’s 2009 5K Virginia Liver Life Walk on May 30 – they had fun in the process and even persuaded their reluctant team mascot to go the distance!

Under the leadership of team captain Alexia Kim-Phuong Christie, the 31-strong team tramped out the 5K course to glory, raising a total of $3,865 to fight diseases of the liver.

Why was Team BPSOS’ participation so important? The fast facts: Hepatitis B and C viruses are both known as “silent killers” that afflict the liver, and a person may be infected – and infectious – for many years without significant symptoms or knowing they are infected. If left untreated, both viruses can lead to liver scarring (cirrhosis), and potentially to liver cancer, liver failure, and death. Worse, the hepatitis B virus is highly infectious – about 50-100 times more than HIV. This means life or death for many Vietnamese, who have the highest incidence of liver cancer among all Asian subgroups. In fact, Vietnamese-American men are over 10 times more likely to be diagnosed with liver cancer than their white counterparts!

That’s a lot of statistics. But for members of Team BPSOS, all of these hard, cold facts have a human face.

“I participated in the Liver Life Walk event and walked an two extra miles for three reasons,” said Trang Khanh Tran, director of BPSOS’ Community Development Department. “First, to remember my brother-in-law, who passed away because of liver cancer; second, to honor all of my donors, who generously contributed for the good cause; and third, to get an opportunity to exercise myself!”
